Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 for Sony E Mount Rolling Review - Insights from fashion photographer Eli Samuel of Samuel Vision.

I have never been great at shooting wide (geez that’s a great way to start a review) But honestly, it doesn’t come naturally to me. I am great up close with a telephoto lens and this is easy to see from my work. I habitually return to my proclivity and it is hurting my progress. So, this is me fighting back, this is my cure. Enter the Batis 18mm.

I am shooting this Thursday with is for the first time, I will report back.

UPDATE 1:

Today, 18th of August 2017. I shot a magazine editorial with this baby and below is me being silly onset.

*Excuse me doing stupid stuff on set. Lol

This was an interesting shoot. The concept was a woman, the muse. She is the focus of the attention from these anonymous, business men that have come to her for an experience. The character is never focused on the audience or the man directly, she is always in control, centered and often disconnected juxtaposed by her allure, beauty, and complexity. I cannot show the final images yet, but I will show the how it was executed. Below is my mood board, this will show you how I structure a shoot. Feel free to hit me with feedback.

Anyway back to the lens, oh my gosh it is stellar! This was up against the Sony 16-35 f4 which is another great lens that I have used but ultimately, I love to shoot primes. ‘Just bloody move’ as my friend John would say. I am happy to report that this was a great choice with the Zeiss 18mm f2.8

A couple of notes.

- Image quality is superb, colour and bokeh (out of focus areas) is smooth and creamy.

- Focused extremely fast with modeling lamp turned on.

- Distortion, well field curvature has to be thought about, it is stupid wide.

UPDATE 2:

Couple of silly snaps of a family BBQ.

So here you can see how wide this thing is, its crazy. These shots the photographer is standing pretty close, kinda hard to discribe how wide this thing is. But its super sharp, crazy nice colour but is a little hefty / sizeable. But as I’ve heard in a review before, I think I’m in love.

Once the publication comes out I will update this with the full images of the shoot above. Until then......Keep Shooting!

Much love,

Eli Samuel.

A Little About Me. #bio #nerd #aspiration

My name is Eli Samuel and I have been a photographer for over 10 years. I think I may have come out of the womb holding a camera! Lol, I have shot most kinds of photography including pictures of family, strangers, events, street life, weddings, studio portraits, concert images, and friends, though I prefer to shoot fashion so I founded SAMUEL VISION to service fashion/editorial and corporate advertising.

In my heart and if you know me, I am a little nerdy. I am a “photo enthusiast” as well as a passionate photographer. Blogging is my way of giving back. I read all the posts published by our heroes in our industry every day like Steve Huff, Ken Rockwell etc.  So I thought to myself, stop being selfish!

My dream is to grace the cover of Vogue Italia. I am coming for you Vogue! Help me get there.
